Churches in Whitby

Whitby has a long and fascinating Christian heritage, and it is a joy to worship as part of a long line of faithful men and women who have served and worshiped here in our beautiful town.

The Parish of Whitby with Ruswarp encompasses three churches within Whitby town. Below, you'll find a bit of information about each of these, along with details of the regular services held there.

St Hilda's
Church Square, West Cliff, Whitby, YO21 3EF

St Hilda's Church has a warm welcoming atmosphere, with beautiful 19th century architecture which lifts our eyes to the Lord, and reminds us of His holiness and transcendence.
As well as our worship services, we also host Messy Church for families here, and a monthly Coffee Morning!

Regular Services

  • Sunday Morning (1st, 2nd, 3rd, 4th of the month) - 9.30am

  • Sunday Evensong (1st of the month) - 6pm 

  • Tuesday Mornings - 10am

St John's 
Brunswick Street, Whitby, YO21 1BN

St John's is also a beautiful 19th century church, with inspiring architecture and features. 
In addition to our worship services, St John's is host to a regular monthly Coffee Morning which is very well attended, and often hosts excellent musical events too.

  • Sunday Morning (1st, 2nd, 3rd, 4th of the month) - 11.15am

  • Thursday Mornings - 10am

St Mary's

St Mary's church stands upon it's original 11th century foundation, and bears the mark of centuries passed since, making it a remarkable, historic and unique church. It has many interesting and unusual features, and attracts a great many visitors. However, far from being merely a tourist attraction, it remains primarily a wonderful place of worship for locals and visitors, who stand in the place of countless generations of Christians before them.

  • Sunday Morning (1st, 2nd, 3rd, 4th of the month) - 11.15am

  • Saturday Mornings - 10.30am

St Mary's is open to the public for visiting as follows:

Sundays - After public worship until 3pm

Mon-Fri - 10.30am until 3pm

Saturdays - 11am until 3pm
